3rd Grade 2017 - 2018
Alston Ridge Elementary Home of the Alligators!
Oh my goodness, what a hot weekend! I hope everyone stayed cool. Speaking of weather, with temperature and heat index so high we won't be going out for recess.
On Wednesday of this week we will take our BOG assessment. Our classes will be starting at 9:30, so attendance and punctuality will be important. Students will not be allowed to have electronic devices and watch alarms should be turned off. Make sure your child eats a good breakfast because we will not be eating our snack in the morning as usual. Math: We will be reviewing rounding and estimating this week. We have another short quiz tomorrow on addition and subtraction. Reading: We have begun discussing folktales this week and the different elements found in them. We are also continuing our Mclass assessments. Writing: We are continuing to work on our narrative piece and becoming familiar with the writing process creating drafts and revising our work. Spelling: We will begin our spelling and word work soon. I have completed everyone's Words Their Way assessment. This is a wonderful research based program. Social Studies: We are continuing our Civics unit focusing on local government and what it means to be a citizen.

Dear parents,
We had a great first week in 3rd Grade! It is a lot I know and can feel overwhelming, but we are all in this together. Over the next couple of weeks, attendance will be pretty important because we are doing a few assessments that will help quide instruction. This week we are doing 2 assessments in our Mclass program and next week we will be taking our BOG assessment for the state. We will practice this on July 25th and then take the actual test on July 27th. The following are skills we are currently working on for each subject: Social Studies: We are discussing government, importance of rules/laws, branches of government, vocabulary Writing: We are learning to incorporate our five senses as we right which will enhance descriptions. We are also looking at how to take a big event and "zoom in" on something smaller. Ask your child about "sparkle words" in writing. Reading: We have begun utilizing QAR strategies. This stands for Question/Answer Relationship. Students determine what kind of question it is and then how to answer it. You will see handouts or charts about this coming home. Math: We are currently working on addition and subtracting with multi-digit numbers. In addition, we are working on place value, different ways to write numbers, and finding important words in a word problem. We will start spelling next week. Welcome to a new year at Alston Ridge Elementary! I look forward to meeting everyone at our Meet the Teacher event Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. You are encouraged to bring the classroom supplies with you and drop them off outside the classroom door. These include: tissues, disinfecting wipes, wide-rule paper, ziploc bags, and index cards. Other supplies can be brought the first day of school such as pencils, binder, glue sticks, scissors, folders, etc.
Please make sure to send lunch money if your child will be purchasing lunch in the cafeteria their first day as well as a snack. Also please let me know how your child will be getting home their first day as well. |
